Borrowing guides

Use these guides to understand a loan offer before deciding whether to borrow. They explain common features; your lender’s actual disclosures determine your terms.

Compare the cost of a loan

An interest rate is one part of borrowing cost. APR also reflects certain fees, which helps explain why a loan’s APR may be higher than its stated interest rate. Compare the amount you receive, fees, payment schedule and total repayment alongside the APR.

A lower monthly payment can result from a longer repayment term and may mean paying more interest overall. For a short-term loan repaid at once, focus on the full amount due and whether you can pay it on the due date without borrowing again.

Understand soft and hard credit inquiries

A soft inquiry and a hard inquiry are both credit checks. Soft inquiries do not affect credit scores; hard inquiries can. A provider’s initial check and a lender’s later application review may be different steps.

Do not assume a request means “no credit check” because it is online or accepts people with bad credit. Read the authorization and ask which check will occur before you proceed. A prequalification or initial response is not necessarily final approval.

Plan for repayments before accepting

An installment loan spreads repayment across scheduled payments. A payday loan is typically short term and often due in one payment. The dates and amounts in your own agreement are what matter for your budget.

Write down the payment dates beside your income dates and essential bills. Check late fees, automatic payment permissions and early repayment terms. If repayment looks unaffordable, compare alternatives such as a bill extension or a payment plan with the company you owe.

Personal loans, home repairs and mortgages

A personal loan used for a permitted home repair is different from a mortgage used to buy or refinance a home. Home equity financing is also a separate product. Compare the purpose, collateral, total cost and consequences of missed payments for the product you actually need.

The request form on FastLoansUp is presented for personal, installment and payday options within a $200–$5,000 request range. It is not advertised as a mortgage application. For mortgage borrowing, use a provider that specifically offers that product.
